A Look At What To Expect During Your Very First Guitar Lessons

Extraordinarily beautiful in sound, a center instrument in many bands, and just downright cool—the guitar is one of those instruments that a lot of people want to learn how to play. If you are one of those people who would love to learn to play the guitar, finding a good place to take beginner guitar lessons is ideal. There is no need to be nervous or apprehensive about the first few lessons; you will just be getting familiar with some of the basics in the beginning. Take a look at some of what you can expect to learn during your very first guitar lessons.

You will learn about the different parts of the guitar.

The guitar is a string instrument, but it does have many parts beyond just the strings. In order to help you truly appreciate how the guitar works, your teacher will show you the different parts of the guitar and the purpose they have. For example, you will learn about the body of the guitar and how different body materials encourage different sounds, and you will likely be shown how the tuners on the guitar work to tighten the strings.

You will learn how to properly hold the guitar to play it.

Holding the guitar in the right position for your body shape is really important. The more comfortable you are with holding the guitar, the less attention you will be paying to holding it and the more attention you can pay to playing the right chords. Your teacher will help you adjust the strap on your guitar so the instrument is held in the right position and determine if you are more comfortable strumming or keying frets with your left or right hand. During this part of your lesson, you will likely also be shown the proper way to key notes on the frets and how to strum with your fingers.

You will learn some of the basic guitar chords.

It can take a while before you are familiar enough with the chords and notes to actually play a song on the guitar, but you will likely be introduced to some of the sounds that are made with different techniques. The teacher will go over with you the basic notes you can play to help you get familiar with the different tones and frets. In addition, you may be shown a bit about keeping your guitar in tune so it plays the proper notes.
